Diet

The three toed box turtle eats both bugs and fruits and vegetables. Most box turtle babies eat red worms, wax worms, and small insects when they are young. As they get older, they will also slowly change to a diet that includes more fruits, vegetables, and greens. Box turtles eat pretty much the same things.

Water

If you are using city water, you should let it sit for about 48 hours so the chlorine can get out of the water. When raising a turtle, especially a box turtle, UVB lighting is always a good idea. Depending on the type of box turtle you buy, you may or may not need a lot of UVB light. We suggest a Reptisun 10.0 lamp and T5 high output tubes instead of spiral lamps. You shouldn’t use spiral or screw-in lamps because they don’t give off enough UVB and can be dangerous.

Hibernation

Your Three Toed box turtle won’t need to hibernate unless you want them to. Most box turtle species naturally go into hibernation, but not all. People think that hibernation is also important for breeding groups because it makes males more fertile. Usually, hibernation starts at the end of November and lasts until mid-March or early April.
